Wrapping My Baby
by Charity Meals

I had a baby yesterday or so it seems to be.

Time has such a sneaky way of playing tricks on me.

I wrapped this baby near my heart and kept him ever close

And how I loved to always know he needed me the most.

Now he's grown so very big, and there's so much he can do.

But still he needs his mama to help him tie his shoe.

And diaper changes still make up a big part of each day.

And sometimes in the night I have to chase bad dreams away.

And every night before he sleeps, I wrap him up again.

We make silly faces at the mirror, say prayers, and I tuck him in.

And when the house falls silent, I think about the day

When he will do things on his own and all in his own way.

But for now I wrap this baby, though babe he is no more.

It's hard now to remember how small he was before.

But sometimes in the evening, when the shadows have grown long

He gets afraid to go to bed unless I come along.

And I wrap him up again, though he has grown so tall.

He knows so much, has grown so much, and yet is still so small.

And one day soon I know that I will wrap him one last time.

I'll set down my baby, and a child I will find.

And then I'll find new ways to show him just how much I care

And that no matter what may come, his mama's always there.
